Tiled tub surround3/5/2023 ![]() We can't see the context of the rest of the room and how the height may or may not balance with the rest of the room. Decide for yourself what king of look appeals to you.ĭecide for yourself how much tile height you want back there. But stone tiles typically have edges that look pretty decent all by themselves (square or bullnosed). It's a design issue.with man-made tiles that exhibit unfinished/unglazed edges that don't look real nice, a bullnosed tile covers that ugly edge. On that note, a separate prefabricated bullnose tile, or going through the process of bullnosing stone tiles may not be necessary. If you wanted a more modern look, skip the chair rail and round over (bullnose) the tiles themselves.this is a neat little custom detail. They are perfect for surrounding a bathtub in a master bathroom. Dark Dark tiles make a bold and sophisticated statement. Then you could possibly use that chair rail trim around the perimeter of your backsplash tiles on the wall. Choose a tile that has a modern shape and size to keep your bathroom feeling contemporary and not outdated. Yes, you want to leave a gap between the tile and wood so you can caulk it with a flexible sealant. But for myself, I'd probably lean in the direction of using a piece of cherry around the perimeter and butt the tile to it. I'd want 5/8" (or thicker) CC plugged and sanded plywood.then a cement board (or one of the other tiling substrates). You don't want to install cement board directly to the dimensional lumber. ![]() You're not looking for much height here, as the wall doesn't need that much protection for a tub.you're looking for a good balance in the room that doesn't look too dainty or overpowering. Oftentimes, a full tile is installed directly on the tub deck, followed by a listello and bullnose. That depends on the tile size and if there are any listellos or bullnoses to install. The board should be level with the surrounding wall. ![]() You need to prepare the surrounding area and a straight board. Have you considered running a piece of cherry around the top perimeter and having the tile butt up to it? After the bathtub has been cleaned, you can begin tiling. I will say that it's not a good idea to let the tile overhang as that's just asking for trouble with a broken tile. You were planning on installing a horizontal band of cherry after the tile height was established. If you tell us what you are thinking, we can help you with your question on how to merge the tile and wood. Judging by the way the cherry frame is flush with the top of your 2x dimensional lumber and the way you talked about hanging the tile over the edge, I'm either: You don't realize you still need to install a layer of plywood over the 2x, than a tile substrate on top of that.
